European Watch Company Buys Crown & Caliber From Hodinkee

European Watch Company, a Boston-based retailer of pre-owned timepieces that also sells online, has purchased Crown & Caliber, the secondhand site previously owned by Hodinkee.

European Watch paid in “the low six figures” for Crown & Caliber, a spokesperson tells JCK. Hodinkee had purchased the Atlanta-based site in 2021 for a reported $46 million. According to Bloomberg, no inventory was included in the European Watch deal.

Hodinkee itself was acquired last week by Watches of Switzerland, though Crown & Caliber was not part of the sale.

In a statement, European Watch said it will integrate Crown & Caliber’s e-commerce platform into its own.

“The Crown & Caliber voice will continue through blog posts authored by expert journalists as well as unique and fresh video content accessible on the existing C&C YouTube and social channels,” it said.

“We’ve kind of mastered this online retail space over the past 30 years, being one of the oldest in the industry,” European Watch Company CEO Joshua Ganjei told Bloomberg.

Gangei’s father, Albert, founded European Watch in 1993. A 2023 article in Axios said the company racked up $100 million in sales in 2022.

Crown & Caliber’s tenure under Hodinkee was by most accounts a troubled one, but Hodinkee founder Benjamin Clymer recently told JCK’s Victoria Gomelsky: “We are happy with where it has ended up.”
