I’ve been checking out the fashions at a string of recent red carpet events—The London Fashion Awards, the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, parties put on by big fashion houses like Louis Vuitton—and I’m happy to report that the jewelry is looking promising (whereas sometimes it’s nonexistent, and that makes me sad).
One of the biggest styles many of these events have in common is the statement earring (it is the holidays after all, and a big, sparkling drop just feels right, doesn’t it?). The thing is, though, that a long, large (often heavy) drop from the earlobe isn’t necessarily suitable for everyone’s personal taste and comfort level, so what to do if you want to make a splash?
Look to the oversized stud, the button, the disc. Like a brooch for the ear, this is a big look that sits close enough to the lobe that it won’t pull on sensitive ears (though likely heavy, a well-secured back will help to alleviate the weight) and makes just as much of a statement as a pair of bedecked chandeliers, a long line of diamonds, or a generously sized pair of hoops.
Not only is this a great style for the elegance of the holidays, but I think their size makes them appropriate for office wear, too (more so than say, a blinding pair of shoulder-dusters—though if you want to wear those to work, that’s pretty darn cool, too). I imagine we’ll be seeing styles like these once awards season officially kicks off not too long after the holidays are over, so stay tuned for more of this variety.
