When the announcement of a new collection from jewelry designer Deirdre Featherstone comes your way, you drop everything and take a look. The “Springtime in New York” theme of these latest pieces was deeply felt by this former Brooklynite, and its emphasis on floral motifs, lavish color combinations, and exotic gemstones (chaorite!) more than delivered on the promise of an exciting debut. And it’s so much more glamorous than my gardening adventures on the Connecticut shoreline.
Bulbs, both their shape and the blooms that they bring, surface in an abundance of earrings in the collection, all designed with floral clusters and the pendulous opaque drops for which Featherstone is known. From the official collection notes: “Perennials are both reoccurring and boundless. Bulbs represent the dormant energy gathered during the winter and the bursts of beauty brought forth during springtime.”
Altogether the collection tells a story of optimism, and harnesses all the joy and excitement that come with those first sightings of daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips in an explosion of lemon chrysoprase, the most vibrant blue-violet Laguna agate, amber, and pink and purple sapphires.
In a personal note shared with her clients, Featherstone said, “I adore spring in New York City: The sky is bright, the air is crispy, and people come out to sit on stoops to chat with friends. The tulips in planters are lovingly tended to by the city gardeners, the pansies arrive along the sidewalks, the fragrance from the hyacinths in our window box wafts gently in through our studio window, and the blizzard of cherry blossoms that line the West Side Highway all remind us that like bulbs, we all burst forth in springtime. It is an explosion of scent, color, and possibilities, but most of all optimism is present.”
Dare you to not be in a good mood after you feast your eyes on highlights from Featherstone’s gorgeous “spring bouquet.” It launches at Bergdorf Goodman in mid-May.
