Halstead Bead is reminding jewelers to apply this week for its 2021 Halstead Grant, which is awarded to new jewelry businesses based on jewelry design and business acumen. The winner will receive a $7,500 cash grant, $1,000 in jewelry supplies, and a trip to Halstead Bead in Prescott, Ariz.; they will also be featured in Halstead print publications and receive a detailed feedback report from the judging committee as well as a signature trophy. The deadline to apply for the grant is Aug. 1.
Last year’s grant winner was Christina Grace, founder of the Los Angeles–based Tin Haus and a GIA graduate jeweler. Her Tin Haus pieces are inspired by abstract art, nature, ancient cultures, and social causes.
Hilary Halstead Scott founded the Halstead Grant program in 2006. The grant application features 15 questions that, when completed, give the applicant a running start to creating a business plan. Questions touch on subjects ranging from jewelry design and collections to determining estimated monthly and annual business expenses.
Jewelers are eligible if they started selling jewelry after Jan. 1, 2016, have a line that includes silver, and intend to pursue their business full time.
The 2021 judging committee includes Hilary Halstead Scott, president of Halstead; Kelli Greene, Halstead’s marketing and creative manager; and Brad Scott, director of finance at Halstead.
Robin Kramer, jewelry industry mentor and business coach at Red Boot Consulting and Flourish & Thrive, is the Halstead Grant guest judge this year. “I am beyond honored to be this year’s Halstead Grant guest judge,” Kramer said in a statement. “I have personally seen the difference the grant has made in designers’ lives. Applying alone can be transformative, and winning is a game changer.”
