Anglo American, the mining company that owns 85 percent of De Beers, has appointed Mark Cutifani as its CEO, effective Apr. 3.
He replaces Cynthia Carroll, who resigned in October. Carroll also served as De Beers chairman, but at press time it was unclear whether Cutifani will also hold that role.
Since 2007, Cutifani has been CEO of AngloGold Ashtani Limited, a major South African gold miner in which Anglo American maintains an interest. He was also chief operating officer of CVRD Inco, the Canadian nickel company. He has a degree in mining engineering and is the current president of the South African Chamber of Mines.
