Mahiar Borhanjoo will step down from one of De Beers’ most powerful positions, senior vice president of global sightholder sales, later this year, and be replaced by Nigel Simson.
Borhanjoo is leaving after deciding not to relocate from London to Botswana with the rest of De Beers’ sales operation.
Simson brings nearly 30 years of diamond expertise to his role, including four years as head of sales in De Beers’ South Africa sightholder sales. He currently serves as the company’s head of beneficiation, where he has been closely involved with sightholders based in producer countries.
“It’s great to have someone as skilled and experienced as Nigel to lead the sales team to further success as we move our international sales activities to Botswana,” Varda Shine, executive vice president of De Beers’ global sightholder sales, said in a statement. “His wealth of experience in diamonds, De Beers, and southern Africa make him perfectly prepared to take the business forward in this exciting period.”
Shine praised Borhanjoo for “his ability to form strong, lasting relationships, both internally and externally.”
