Jewelry industry veteran David Norman (pictured) has been appointed president of Barton-Clay Fine Jewelers, a one-store retailer based in Mountain Brook, Ala.
Norman has more than 45 years of experience in the retail jewelry industry. He began his career with Fox’s Jewelers, a chain of 44 stores, where he rose through the ranks to become the vice president of merchandising and marketing.
He eventually served as vice president of merchandising and marketing at Reeds Jewelers, when it numbered nearly 100 stores. He was the president of Schwarzschild Jewelers, in Richmond, Va.; a consultant for Crescent Jewelers in Oakland, Calif., where he developed a division aimed at the Hispanic market; and a co-owner of Thomas S. Fox Jewelry in Grand Rapids, Mich.
He has worked for online companies, including iJewelry and Ideal Diamond Solutions.
In a statement, Eric C. McClain, CEO and owner of the Birmingham-area jeweler, said that he originally hired Norman as a consultant and found his experience “invaluable.”
“His varied experience in the jewelry industry—from merchandising to marketing to e-commerce—will be instrumental in guiding our firm into the future,” he added.
In the same statement, Norman said, “I’ve gotten to know the McClains and Birmingham. I realized just how much I missed that day-to-day engagement that’s part and parcel of managing an independent fine jeweler. I’m also looking forward to getting involved with the Birmingham community.”
The jeweler was founded in 1987 by McClain and the late Barton Sperry Snow.
