Jesús Hernando Sánchez, 62, considered a leader of Colombia’s emerald mining business, was killed Sunday inside his Bogotá home by a sniper, according to an article in Colombia Reports and other news sources.
The shooting happened in the same neighborhood where Sánchez’s former associate Juan Sebastián Aguilar (also known as Pedro Pechuga) was murdered in August under similar circumstances, reports say.
Sánchez had reportedly survived two prior assassination attempts.
According to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has requested information about Sánchez’s murder from local authorities and is looking into possible money laundering through emeralds.
