Hirsh (“Hershel”) Chitrik, president and CEO of Citra Trading Corporation, died Dec. 28 in New York. He was 84.
Chitrik founded Citra in 1961. While the company was first known as a pearl importer, it soon branched out into gold chains. Some credit Chitrik with inventing the lightweight Italian gold chain. The company also expanded into diamonds, and soon became a major supplier of diamonds from what was then called the Soviet Union.
Chitrik is survived by his wife Rivka, as well as numerous children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. A brother, Aaron, also in the jewelry industry, died in November.
