On July 3, Christie’s London is hosting its annual Antiquities sale featuring a selection of artifacts from ancient Mediterranean cultures, from ancient Egypt to the fall of the Roman Empire. Among the jewels are one-of-a-kind pieces, some even as early as the fifth century B.C. The sale also includes a rare collection of Achaemenid gold jewelry, reputedly from the Hamadan region, originating from the Maurice Vidal collection.
These jewels will be auctioned alongside other ancient treasures. One such piece that is particularly notable is an Attic black-figured amphora connected to the Group E, closely associated with the work of Exekias, one of the most renowned vase painters of his era. This amphora vividly illustrates Herakles’ 10th Labor, where the hero battles the three-headed, three-bodied monster Geryon. Also in the Classical section is an Etruscan bronze kore, along with a variety of Attic and South Italian vases, Greek terra-cottas, and Classical bronzes.
These pieces aside, we’re taking a closer look below at the jewelry highlights in the upcoming sale that deserve a moment of their own.
