It’s interesting to me, in a dishy way, that Gwyneth Paltrow and her fiancé Brad Falchuk wear a Fitbit every day—when Apple Watch designer Jony Ive is reportedly good friends with Paltrow’s ex-husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Does she not wear an Apple Watch because of the association? Even though her daughter’s name is Apple?
Okay, I digress (and perhaps need a hobby). It’s likely that one fact has nothing to do with the other. Paltrow, a fitness guru in her own right who once repped a luxury smartwatch from Frédérique Constant, is probably gifted with every fitness wearable under the sun—so had ample opportunity to test-drive every Fitbit model. Maybe she and Falchuk simply like the look and/or feel of Fitbit bands better than the Apple Watch.
But there’s no doubt about it—celebrities who don wearables almost always wear either a Fitbit device or an Apple Watch.
No surprise there. The two tech companies ranked number one (Apple) and three (Fitbit) in the world last month when it came to total shipments in the first quarter of 2018 (low-priced Chinese wearable brand Xiaomi came in second).
Which is the more popular wearable with celebs? Well, in 2015 Apple gifted its limited-edition, all-gold Apple Watch to a slew of pop stars and fashion celebrities, including Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Pharrell, Drake, and Karl Lagerfeld. They all posted the watch, which was at the time unavailable to the public, to Instagram.
But there seems to have been a drop-off in Apple’s gifting, and therefore celebrity wearing. Meanwhile, Fitbit’s seemingly been ramping up its influencer gifting—and subsequent promotion of its celebrity wearers.
