As we watch the trees turn from green to gold, red, and yellow (it’s happening too fast—don’t go anywhere, beautiful leaves!), I’m giving myself over to the coziness that autumn inspires. In this period of hygge, we turn to a deeper, earthier range of colors, whether in our wardrobes or jewelry, our homes, or the fruits and vegetables that we cook with. Reluctantly, we bid a “see ya later” to summer’s bright hues and embrace oxblood and wine, olive and emerald, amber and marigold. What I like best, though, is brown.
Any shade, really, it doesn’t matter. From camel to coffee, tawny to taupe, brown is the color that ties everything together this season. It’s the anchor for the most down-to-earth looks and even the dramatic ones (plus, I can’t stop thinking about this brown sweater that I’ve yet to press purchase on).
As in fashion, jewelry featuring brown gemstones is like a breath of autumn. The way a zircon or a smoky quartz glimmers is as sweet as sap and as comforting, too.
What I especially like about brown gemstones—particularly in the case of the smaller ones—is that they blend so well in a golden setting, sending a smattering of sparkle across a neck party or through a mix-and-match group of earrings. Maybe sparkle isn’t quite the word I mean, perhaps instead the word is glint or glow. A brown gem doesn’t quite shine like a diamond (unless it’s a brown diamond, but not precisely in the same way), its contrast not so obvious. It’s more like an enhanced feature along a line of gold, one that sets the entire look ablaze. Except for the larger ones. Those are just in-your-face amazing.
Here are some of my recent favorites in brown and gold. Though I highlight them in this season especially, I think they could bring comfort all year long and can match well with whatever each season has in store.
