September is an absolutely lovely month of transition, in many ways. It’s back-to-school season, as the carefree vibes of summer settle into something else, a casual sort of coziness that begs us to slow it down. The weather can still be scorching, yet we begin to swap our wardrobes, yearning for the days when wearing anything leather or denim won’t make the sweat stick to our bodies (and then cursing those days for getting too cold, too fast).
It’s also sapphire season. September’s birthstone is rightfully a mainstay of stores all year long, in engagement rings and wedding bands as well as other fine jewelry pieces. But this is the month sapphire gets extra play, allowing us to linger on the most splendid jewels set with the gemstone.
The assortment is endless, and because sapphire is gorgeous in an array of sizes and colors, it isn’t hard to persuade jewelers to work with it.
Many people liken sapphires to the sky, particularly at night. Glittering in a range of blue, the stones evoke what you might experience if you’re fortunate enough to gaze up at a blanket of stars.
This is reflected in the collection that Dubai jeweler Toktam named Kahkeshan—Farsi for cosmos—with jewels that depict the sun, solar system, and stars. The Sky ring, pictured at top, represents the heavens at night through varied shades and sizes of sapphires, sparkling as the stars do: pops of lighter blue, and nearly white, on a deep, dark background of blue. From this teardrop-shape piece of the sky shoot rays of gold and diamonds, like beams of light.
Aside from its celestial inspiration, the ring is aesthetically pleasing for its plumage of gold, fanning out beautifully from its sapphire pear, as if the gem were wearing a crown. The brand has a matching pair of earrings and necklace, an impactful suite worthy of September’s sapphire.
