My youngest daughter’s birthstone is a peridot, and I often find I’m looking for exceptional pieces featuring the gemstone (if nothing else, to add to my pie-in-the-sky wish list). With this offering from New Orleans’ M.S. Rau, I believe I’ve found the exceptional indeed.
Not just exceptional—extraterrestrial.
A 1.11 ct. meteoritic peridot sits at the center of this art deco–meets–futuristic-looking ring, a rare find given that peridots from space (from space!) rarely exceed a single carat given its extreme conditions.
“This interstellar peridot is one of the most remarkable pieces we’ve ever had in our gallery—it’s a rarity that is literally out of this world,” says Bill Rau, third-generation owner of M.S. Rau. “Astronomers believe this exceptional 1.11-carat peridot to be a remnant from the formation of our solar system, and it would have arrived with us on Earth likely billions of years later aboard a meteorite. This stunning peridot is at the very top of the list of the world’s most exclusive gemstones, and with it exceeding one carat and perfect green coloration—a celestial marvel.”
The stone’s remarkable origins have been determined through extensive testing by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), noting its chemical markers that work to establish its interstellar formation.

The ring’s platinum and rose gold setting, which might be described as masculine, was originally commissioned for a collector, a substantial piece certainly worthy of the “Stellar” stone. For whoever possesses the lucky stars to become the stone’s newest owner, Rau says the gallery would love to collaborate on a new, bespoke setting, utilizing its range of creative design ideas and experts.
The purchase of the piece comes with comprehensive literature describing the stone and its origins, including an appendix letter and a report from GIA, as well as a dedicated book from Bellerophon Gemlab.
