Last week I shared a roundup of ballerina pink jewels, feeling inspired by the shade after it made multiple appearances at this year’s Academy Awards.
But I held off on including Kamal’s Lotus ring pictured here, so struck by its beauty that I wanted to indulge myself in writing a few words to celebrate it. Not that words are imperative in its presence—if anything, it wouldn’t be strange to be at a loss for them.
The center stone, a tourmaline under 13 carats, is gorgeously good—a statement that’s softened with its shade of pink that lands somewhere between Barbie and ballerina. “This was actually the first stone I saw at a jewelry show and I absolutely fell in love with it,” eponymous designer Kamal Patel tells me. “This stone is so special, the color sparked an intense feeling of inspiration for my new signature Lotus setting—that is actually what Kamal means in Hinduism.”
“Even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters, the lotus produces the most beautiful flower,” the designer adds. “The lotus flower is regarded in many different cultures, especially in Eastern religions, as a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration, and rebirth. Its characteristics are a perfect analogy for the human condition.”
The main stone is the focal point of this blossoming beauty, but look further—a peek underneath the setting—and you’ll find an enchanting array of diamonds hugging each corner like leaves, stemming from a receptacle of white gold—the finishing touch that makes this setting truly appear as a flower.
This being the version to launch the Lotus setting, the style has since been created with a green sapphire and a padparadscha, and can be customized according to a client’s desires.
