I’m biased, but I think October is the best time of year to get married. The leaves are changing, the chill in the air commands loved ones to gather close for warmth, and—if you’re into Halloween—there’s nothing that can’t be done with a spooky twist.
All this to describe my wedding day, 15 years ago this month (though it feels like only a few). I’ve had three different engagement rings since then: First, I changed my ring completely, swapping a princess cut for a round brilliant; later, I had the stones reset in a chunky gold beauty. And I’m constantly plotting what to do next.
I’m still madly in love with this third iteration, so I don’t intend to alter it, but I wouldn’t mind starting up a collection of engagement rings. This year’s jewelry shows got me grooving on elongated stones, something I never thought I’d be into. I love the idea of a marquise (words I truly never thought I’d say), oval, or pear shape vertically aligning on my finger, making it appear perhaps just a bit longer, a bit more elegant.
So, like many current wedding ring consumers (if we’re to believe the reported trends), I’ve got my eye on a long diamond style, such as this creation from the Japanese-based brand Januka.
Januka’s design shows a marquise-cut diamond framed in a rectangular arrangement of gold—like a precious item enclosed in a box. The rectangle’s corners are filled with “negative space,” giving the diamond the appearance of floating. This mirror-finished box rests atop a wide band in matte brushed gold, an irresistible contrast that’s simple yet expertly done, exhibiting the nuances of Danish design Januka creator Jo Nakamura learned in New York and the Netherlands.
Januka showcased its work in the States at this summer’s Melee the Show in New York, and the brand continues to add new styles to its collection. Just save this one for me!
