All birthstones except turquoise make perfect sense to me. November’s citrine: iconic for autumn. Diamond—like glittering April rain. Ruby, a sizzling shade for the hot month of July. But turquoise in December? Everyone knows turquoise is the stone of summer.
Yet it might be just what we need this month. Whereas tanzanite and zircon feel emblematic of the holiday season and its (sometimes) icy weather, turquoise provides soothing undertones to a potentially chaotic time of year. Turquoise is the color of tropical waters. It’s quietly bold, always beautiful, never in-your-face.
Turquoise can still make a powerful statement, whether it’s in a cocktail ring, a pair of chandelier earrings, or—in the case of this exceptional vintage piece—a knock-your-socks-off necklace.
On this resplendent necklace from the 1970s, turquoise wraps around a diamond collar, with oval and round stones set in two snaking rows and three rows of turquoise at the necklace’s front.
One might see this fine treasure as the finishing touch to cowgirl couture, but given its ’70s-era vintage, the necklace would make an ideal accessory for a New Year’s Eve bash with disco balls galore. We love its plentiful portions of turquoise for December dances and summer soirees alike.
Come to think of it, maybe turquoise is perfect for December—what better time than the holidays to don your most scene-stealing jewels?
Mostly, though, I want to pair the piece with denim, reminiscent of JCK magazine’s spectacular styling in its 2021 show issue. But imagine the impact of the unexpected—worn, for example, with a tartan dress, like a neatly wrapped gift, topped off with this groovy, gorgeous jewel.
