With Mother’s Day just a few weeks away, I am looking forward to my breakfast in bed, though the breakfast part—something of questionable edibility and always covered in sprinkles—is not the emphasis here.
I’m also looking forward to adding a new jewel to my collection of mama pieces—and this one from Alice Pierre definitely fits the bill. A sucker for anything with a groovy ’70s vibe, I love this nameplate-style necklace bearing the best name I’ve ever been called.
“The inspiration behind our Mama necklace was slightly different from the typical progression of a design,” says brand founder and designer Alice Basteguian. “I was putting together a mood board for an upcoming photo shoot at the time and realized it looked more like an inspiration for a piece of jewelry. It included ’70s fashion, fluid forms, and vintage posters with bold fonts. There was something brewing on that mood board, so I started to sketch out different things until I fell in love with one of them, which ended up being the Mama necklace.”
The funky font is outlined in bands of 14k yellow gold layered like a cake and iced with diamond accents. The necklace, which is handmade in Los Angeles, sits at the perfect length for a good glimpse—16 inches long.

“I think personalized jewelry is such a meaningful gift for Mother’s Day,” Basteguian says. “Of course I recommend the Mama necklace, but I also would recommend the All-in Rectangle pendant. It can not only hold letters and names but also numbers and dates to represent special days.
“I must say, however, as a mother, thoughtful gestures from my kids are the most meaningful.”
