Pretty soon, Pantone will release its spring/summer 2019 Color Report (here’s the one from 2018), and, not too long after, it will announce its pick for the 2019 Color of the Year. Many of us look forward to this announcement—whether or not we agree with the selection is another story—and this coming season is no different.
But another color source has beaten Pantone to the punch, already naming its selection. Blueprint, Behr’s 2019 Color of the Year, something like an algae-kissed teal, is described as an “honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life,” according to the paint brand. I find it to be a refreshing choice—far superior to the complicated hue of Pantone’s Ultra Violet, in my opinion—and can understand why its soothing presence would function so well in a home.
I think it would be as equally comforting in fashion, already mentally adding a cozy sweater in a like shade to my wish list for the fall and winter.
While there are a number of colored gemstones that would either match or complement Blueprint, I can’t help but think how lovely this shade would look paired with gold. That blue sweater I’m conjuring in my mind (hoping some brand or designer offers one this year) just begs for rich yellow gold hoop earrings. And a dress would be lovely with a brassy rose gold collar.
My suggestion for autumn, rather than stocking up on matching blue jewels—though, you can’t lose with blue gemstones, you just can’t—is to incorporate Blueprint into your showcases: Through ring boxes or pillows perhaps, or simply by including a swath of fabric to nestle the jewels into. Then add your loveliest yellow and rose gold jewels front and center for a showcase that absolutely pops. It’s a beautiful departure from the typical shades of autumn we are drawn to (brown, orange, maroon, forest green…), and your customers will enjoy the fresh look, I’ll bet.
