When selling engagement rings, it pays to be mindful of your buyers’ budget. TheKnot.com’s 2013 Engagement & Jewelry Study found that 74 percent of polled brides and grooms shopped for rings with a hard-and-fast allowance in mind. But, as we all know, budgets were made to be busted. While 39 percent of respondents said they stuck to their initial ring budget, 23 percent said they budgeted a certain amount but ended up spending more. Just 12 percent reported that they budgeted but ultimately spent less than they planned to. Sixty-nine percent of the grooms who shopped with a budget in mind said they worked up the numbers on their own—without the help of a jeweler or financial pro.
