Barbara Walters’ 15+ ct. Harry Winston engagement ring (pictured) is set to be the star jewelry lot in the upcoming Bonhams auction of the esteemed television journalist’s belongings.
Bonhams is gearing up for the highly anticipated auction Barbara Walters: American Icon, which will comprise two segments—live in New York on Nov. 6 and online from Oct. 29 to Nov. 7.
The sale will showcase over 300 lots, valued in total at approximately $8 million and encompassing jewelry, art, clothing, handbags, decor, and personal items, all reflecting Walters’ refined taste and iconic status.
“My mother was a devoted journalist, loyal friend, and loving mother,” said Walters’ daughter, Jacqueline Danforth, in a statement. “Our home was always filled with interesting and beautiful reminders of her incredible, diverse life. I know she would find comfort that these pieces she cherished so much will be enjoyed and cared for.”
The Harry Winston ring, expected to fetch $600,000 to $900,000, boasts a 13.84 ct. emerald-cut diamond at its center, with a duo of 1.45 cts. t.w. brilliant-cut diamonds on the sides. Walters received it as an engagement ring from Merv Adelson, to whom she was married in the ’80s. Below are additional exquisite jewelry pieces that will be in the auction.
Among the jewelry treasures in Walters’ collection is a pair of paisley-shape earrings designed by the Paris studio JAR and adorned with multicolor gems including 2.5 cts. t.w. diamonds. They come with a signed pouch and could command up to $250,000, per the presale estimate.
Diamond jewels in the Walters sale also include a delicate bow brooch dating to circa 1910 and another Harry Winston piece—a monogrammed pendant necklace.
To give potential bidders a closer look, Bonhams will preview select highlights from the collection in various cities, starting with Boston (Walters’ hometown), then Los Angeles, Paris, London, and Hong Kong.
