Q&A: Anita Ko on Her Gem Award, Career Highs, and What’s Next

Share

You often hear a jewelry brand or designer that Hollywood types wear in public described as a “celebrity jeweler.” The question is: Do they keep it on when the cameras aren’t there?

Anita Ko is one of those jewelers who truly becomes an obsession for the people who wear her work. For example, Chloe Kim, the two-time Olympic gold medal winner, has told multiple interviewers that she never removes her Anita Ko earrings—and this comes from someone with 13 piercings, so you know she’s loyal to what she loves.

In March, Ko received the Gem Award for jewelry design, a testament to both her talent and to her fans outside and inside the industry. Since her brand launched in 2006, Ko has built a brand that not only tells her personal story but has become the go-to jeweler for modern women who like unique pieces and just a bit of edginess in their gold and diamonds.

Anita Ko Cross Ring
Anita Ko is known as a designer of fine jewelry that blends elegance with a contemporary style, like in this diamond cross ring ($3,000).

JCK spoke to Ko about her Gem Award, her overall career, and what’s next.

How did you feel hearing your name when you won the Gem Award?

I was, honestly, in complete shock. I couldn’t and still cannot believe it. I didn’t anticipate winning the award, I covered my face in disbelief when I heard my name called out. It was a truly emotional moment. I’m beyond grateful and extremely thankful to everyone on the committee for honoring me with this incredible opportunity.

What career moments do you think led to your nomination and award—maybe one or two times when you thought you had hit upon something magical in your work?

I don’t believe it’s one particular moment. There have been so many highlights throughout my career that I am grateful for. Winning the People’s Choice Award at the Couture show in Las Vegas was a wonderful achievement. To be chosen by my peers was such an honor. In 2020, we had an incredible Oscars moment with double-nominee actress Scarlett Johansson. I was extremely proud to see her wear the one-of-a-kind diamond earrings I designed for her.

Ko Gem Awards
Nominees for the Gem Award for designer included Kirsty Stone, Retrouvai; Anita Ko; and Ten Thousand Things’ Ron Anderson and David Rees.

Why is this award so special?

This award means so much to me because I understand that the Gem Awards represents excellence in the fine jewelry business. To be chosen amongst so many talented designers is a huge privilege that I do not take lightly.

This feels like a creative high in your life in terms of personal and professional milestones coming together. Friendships, celebrity sightings—everything seems charmed. You’ve accessorized queens of every kind. So what comes next?

I’m very grateful for so many wonderful people in my life. So many people helped me along the way and I try to help whoever I can. There’s no question that it takes hard work and it did take years. I’m not sure what comes next. I hope I inspire younger designers to believe in themselves and work hard because I was that girl with a few pieces of jewelry and a dream to have my own brand.
