A rare 7.59 ct. fancy vivid blue diamond is expected to fetch a world record per-carat price at Sotheby’s Oct. 7 Magnificent Jewels auction in Hong Kong.
The internally flawless Premier Blue is the largest round brilliant fancy vivid blue diamond ever graded by GIA.
Acording to The New York Times, the diamond is “the size of a shirt button.”
The auction house expects it to bring in $19 million, which would be a world record per-carat price for any diamond.
The round brilliant cut is rarely used in colored diamonds because too much rough is cut.
“Sotheby’s has been entrusted with many important blue diamonds and holds the current per-carat price record for [a] fancy vivid blue diamond at auction,” Chin Yeow Quek, Sotheby’s deputy chairman, Asia, and chairman of International Jewellery, Asia, said in a statement. “No round fancy vivid blue diamond of significance has ever appeared at auction.”
