4 Jewelry and Style Podcasts to Check Out

Because you can’t watch YouTube while you’re driving

Podcasts—radio-style audio shows that are available on demand on smartphones—have been netting huge followings in the past few years, with must-listen shows such as Serial and Death, Sex & Money turning Netflix binge-watchers into avid audio fans.

There’s a podcast for pretty much everything under the sun (subscribe to The Big Listen podcast for ideas on great listens), but jewelry-centric podcasts are still relatively scarce.

That said, there are some indie craft/maker and style-focused podcasts that feature worthwhile info and/or chatter on jewelry design, fabrication, and marketing.

Here are a few jewelry and style shows worth a listen.

Flourish & Thrive Academy
This is the podcast for the Flourish & Thrive Academy, a jewely consultancy firm launched by Tracy Matthews, former owner/designer for the Tracy Matthews Designs jewelry line, and Robin Kramer, a former director of sales for Dogeared jewelry and gifts. The partners, who met on the ENK circuit, now help brands amp up their marketing and sales. Their podcast follows suit, dispensing advice on subjects including how to create a culture of fun in your jewelry business, how to overcome your fear of selling, building relationships with social influencers, and much more.

Etsy Conversations Podcast
“Inspiring interviews with Etsy shop owners” is the tagline for this ongoing podcast, which profiles makers selling on Etsy, including jewelry artists. Host Ijeoma Eleazu is an Etsy seller herself, so she asks interesting, relevant questions of her subjects. Her goal for the podcast is to “learn from other Etsy sellers by providing you with real-life tips and techniques from current Etsy sellers that will help you get your first sale—or your next sale.” But in gathering tips from artists, she also paints vivid profiles of her subjects’ lives and passions. And Eleazu‘s honey-toned voice and even pacing make this one pure easy listening.

Unbuttoned by Yahoo Style
Joe Zee, veteran magazine editor and current editor-in-chief of Yahoo Style, hosts this lively, fast-paced podcast about style and fashion on the runways and in pop culture. Zee’s energized delivery is a shot in the arm, so gulp your morning coffee before pressing play. But he draws heavy hitters to the broadcast—guests have included four of this year’s CFDA nominees for Swarovski’s Emerging Designer of the Year Award, designer Chris Benz, and House of Cards costume designer Kemal Harris.

JewelryMonk Podcast
Veteran jewelry-maker Doug Napier, who calls himself the JewelryMonk, created this podcast as an educational portal for jewelry-makers—and provides tips for everything from soldering and silver annealing to workroom ventilation and the proper use of specific tools. Napier’s advice rolls out on a slow-and-steady drip, and you may feel compelled to fast-forward at times. But the lessons he imparts are foundational for beginning and mid-level jewelry-makers.
