After the 2023 Emmys were delayed until January 2024, the TV awards got back on track for its 2024 ceremony, and some things haven’t changed.
The Bear? Not a comedy, no matter how many times the Television Academy insists it is, and no matter how many trophies it wins (this year it was 11, including supporting actors Liza Colón-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as well as star Jeremy Allen White).
There’s always one head-scratching hot new thing at the Emmys—on Sunday it was Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. And one big star who wins her first Emmy—in this case, Jodie Foster, for True Detective: Night Country. Also, one show that knocks everything out of the park: At the 2024 Emmys, that was FX’s Shōgun, which took home a record 18 Emmys, including outstanding drama series (14 of its awards were Creative Arts Emmys, which were presented the previous weekend).
Now for the main event: the jewelry. At the 76th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sept. 15, we saw a few necklaces—a Serpenti here, a Sabyasachi there—and the usual brooches on men’s lapels (props to Fellow Travelers star Jonathan Bailey for wearing a De Beers Metamorphosis piece, and not the usual you-know-what on a rock). But mostly we saw earrings…lots of earrings. And since many gowns were relatively intricate, we honestly didn’t mind the glaring lack of neckwear. Let’s investigate.
Anna Sawai
The New Zealand–born former Japanese pop star was the indisputable winner of the red carpet in a custom Vera Wang gown with a drop-waist peplum and Cartier jewels (she’s a new brand ambassador). Shōgun had a historic night on many levels, including this: With her win, Sawai became the first actor of Asian descent to earn best actress in a drama series.
Greta Lee
Nominated for her supporting role in The Morning Show, Lee wore a delicate layered white lace Loewe resort 2025 gown that on most people would look like a shower curtain. Yet somehow on Lee it looked edgy. Smartly, she chose to add a major pop of color with a Tiffany tanzanite ring and earrings—a brand she favors, and a stone that the house introduced.
Jean Smart
When she took the stage to accept her sixth Emmy—her third for Hacks, the series in which she stars as a stand-up comic—we knew immediately who designed those diamond drop earrings, rings, and bracelet: Rahaminov. Smart has worn them at past Emmys; she’s worn them at the SAG Awards. If it ain’t broke…!
Selena Gomez
We applaud Gomez for so many things, but we’re absolutely amazed that she managed to keep a straight face while presenting with her Only Murders in the Building costars (and fellow nominees) Martin Short and Steve Martin, who she described as “two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.” Okay, back to her look: a silk velvet halter gown by Ralph Lauren and Tiffany diamonds galore—five diamond rings, a lock bangle and a mixed cluster bracelet, and earrings that perfectly mirror the embellished neckline. She killed that.
Mindy Kaling
Taking the stage as a presenter with fellow TV docs Mekhi Phifer (ER) and Zach Braff (Scrubs), the Mindy Project star went high-glam in what Indian couturier Gaurav Gupta described as a “black glacier embroidery sculpted gown.” We love how the dripping diamonds in her Wempe earrings echo the cascading beading on the bodice.
Christine Baranski
A nominee for her supporting role on The Gilded Age—she also presented with other former TV lawyers Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) and Gina Torres (Suits, Pearson)—Baranski took her show title to heart, wearing a stunning metallic organza off-the-shoulder Oscar de la Renta spring 2025 gown. All her jewelry was vintage, courtesy of Fred Leighton: a 1960s fluted emerald and diamond leopard ring by David Webb; a 1950s emerald bead, diamond, and gold cuff by Suzanne Belperron; and 1960s gold and diamond leaf earrings by French jeweler Pierre Sterlé. Magnifique!
