2023 Oscar Jewelry: Everything Everywhere That We Loved

It was a big night for Everything Everywhere All At Once, white dresses, and arm sleeves/elbow-length gloves.

Other than a surprisingly blah beige—sorry, champagne!—carpet, the 95th Academy Awards on March 12 at the Dolby Theatre in L.A. brought few surprises: a few boring fashion moments, a few daring fashion moments, and a few major jewelry moments.

Here’s a roundup of the best gems on the no-longer-red carpet. Spoiler: We’ve got more than one look from Rihanna.

The Best Original Song nominee walked the carpet—a step she often skips—in a custom chocolate brown sheer and leather Alaïa. (It’s like a totally important designer!) London-based high jeweler Moussaieff designed her earrings and rings, all featuring large brown diamonds. An edgy and unexpected choice.

For her history-making Best Actress Oscar win—in an ethereal Dior Haute Couture gown—she wore more than 175 carats of dazzling diamonds. Also, we love a necklace as a hairband.

And speaking of a necklace as a hairband…Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Danai Gurira wrapped her hair in a choker too. The rings, bracelet, and showstopping earcuff—everything is by Paris-based Messika—employ pear-shape diamonds to create modern wing shapes. With her Jason Wu gown, the whole look is a little Audrey Hepburn–esque, no?

Jessica Chastain

Last year’s Best Actress winner took a break from spinning on a turntable in A Doll’s House on Broadway to jet out to L.A. to present a couple of acting awards. Not surprisingly, her look was all Gucci: a custom silver crystal-and-sequin-embroidered gown; and a Lionhead high jewelry necklace with tsavorites and diamonds. Last year, spinel;, this year tsavorites…good for Chastain for choosing colored stones we don’t often see on the whatever-colored carpet.

Whether you love or hate the massive shoulder bow, there’s no denying that this sweeping ruby-red Elie Saab haute couture gown was one of the best of the night. Delevingne went high-glam with her jewelry too—big statement pieces from Bulgari. We’d expect nothing less from a Vogue cover girl.

The man brooch parade marches on! Best Supporting Actor Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) wore a Fred Leighton diamond and black velvet pansy pin, Best Actor nominee Paul Mescal wore a Faune et Flore diamond and platinum high jewelry brooch by Cartier, Best Actor winner Brendan Fraser (The Whale) went antique with a bar brooch from Platt Boutique…and presenter Michael B. Jordan wore not one but two of the most ubiquitous (and dynamic) brooches on the market, the Schlumberger Bird on a Rock from Tiffany & Co. He also donned a Tiffany watch, diamond studs, diamond ring, and tennis bracelet (fun fact: nominee Michelle Williams was wearing the same one). Men, let’s keep the accessorizing going, please!

We think the King would have been proud. And it coordinates so well with his wife (and fellow nominee) costume designer Catherine Martin’s gown!

First: That is a tough color to pull off. But Oh looks terrific in the Giambattista Valli spring 2023 haute couture gown. Second: How stunning is that Harry Winston necklace from Briony Raymond Estate? It’s a statement piece the likes of which we rarely see at events like the Oscars.

Mindy Kaling

We’re so used to seeing the writer-actress-producer in bright colors that this custom Vera Wang design came as a bit of a shock. But Kaling looks sensational in the sheer-paneled gown. And the massive shoulder-duster earrings by Boucheron couldn’t be more on-trend. BTW: Did anyone else notice that Kaling changed into a black version of this gown for the telecast?

Everyone’s favorite young Elvis looked sharp in a classic slim-fit double-breasted Saint Laurent tuxedo. (Was the wide lapel a subtle nod to Elvis? Square-toed boots—yea or nay? Discuss.) And though he’s been wearing silver-tone jewelry most of the awards season—Cartier, as he’s an ambassador for the brand—last night he opted to go for gold. Another classic choice.

Seriously, how cute are these two? Getting ready to go onstage to present, the Glass Onion: A Knives Out mystery costars looked gorgeous in gowns by Vera Wang (Monáe) and Rodarte (Hudson). And they look dazzling in their diamonds—Monáe in Reza and Hudson in Rahaminov.

The Indian actress was on hand to introduce the Best Original Song winner, “Naatu Naatu” from RRR. We loved how Padukone so accurately described the song (“In addition to being sung in Telegu and illustrating the film’s anti-colonialist themes, it’s also a total banger”), and we couldn’t help noticing her Cartier jewels, including two rings and a bracelet worn over her gloves—something of a trend this season. As an aside: If you haven’t seen RRR yet, you must. The whole movie is an action-packed delight.

You didn’t think Rihanna was going to stop at just one gown and one jewelry look, did you? Please! To perform her song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Rihanna piled diamonds on diamonds on diamonds by De Beers. Is it cliché at this point to say she was shining bright like a diamond?

Ruth Carter

We’d be remiss if we didn’t give a nod to Ruth Carter—winner of Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—and her supercool statement earrings, which she credited to Julia Koerner, her “architect of 3D artistry.” As she told Variety in an interview: “They’re just like Angela Bassett’s crown in the film.… They’re kind of tribal. They’re very light, easy to wear.” Bonus: The limited-edition earrings are available to purchase!
