“The Golden Globes are on tonight?” a friend asked me. “Who knew?” You’d be forgiven for not knowing that the 80th annual Golden Globes did, indeed, happen on Jan. 10.
As for the red carpet, the mood was, regrettably, a bit subdued. Perhaps it was the odd Tuesday night scheduling, reticence after last year’s ceremony cancellation, or ongoing fear of an impending recession. But the show that was once dubbed Hollywood’s biggest party didn’t look very celebratory jewelry-wise.
Let’s hope the low-key looks don’t carry over to the SAG Awards and the Oscars. In the meantime, here are the GG attendees whose gems caught our eye.
Jerrod Carmichael
The host/comedian was frank, funny, and super topical, addressing the cancellation of last year’s awards head-on in his opening monologue: “I’m here cause I’m Black,” he said.
Now, we expected great—and unsparing—jokes, but we’re not sure we expected so much jewelry! Along with numerous outfit changes, Carmichael dazzled us with brooches and necklaces (including a pearl strand to close the show). Between this and the vintage diamond Toni + Chloë Goutal necklace he donned at the Emmys, he’s turning out to be quite the jewelry wearer to watch.
Julia Garner
Most people wearing this precious pink Gucci gown would look like something that should be on top of a cake. Yet somehow, Garner—a double Golden Globe nominee for Inventing Anna and Ozark (she won for the latter)—looked simply lovely. Props for choosing delicate white diamond De Beers jewelry that picked up on the rhinestone accents in the dress.
Jeremy Pope
Nominated for his turn as a gay Marine in the movie The Inspection, Pope—who can currently be seen on Broadway as Jean-Michel Basquiat in the play The Collaboration—is fast becoming a red carpet star thanks to his daring fashion and jewelry choices. That leather Dolce & Gabbana suit! Those Cartier jewels! Flawless.
Michelle Yeoh
A winner for her badass performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Yeoh charmed the audience with her straight-from-the-heart acceptance speech…and then threatened to beat up the people who tried to play her off. (You know she could!) Embellished from top to bottom, her midnight-blue Armani Privé gown was almost a jewel unto itself, so her jewelry choice had to be just right, and diamonds by Moussaieff High Jewelry were the perfect selection.
Rihanna
RiRi may have skipped the red carpet, but she certainly didn’t escape our notice. The singer—nominated for her Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever song “Lift Me Up”—dazzled in a voluminous Schiaparelli Couture gown and a massive bib necklace by Cartier, plus earrings by Cartier and Reza (she wore a single Reza pear-shape stud in her right ear). Alas, Rihanna didn’t take home the trophy, but she received tons of shout-outs from fellow nominees and presenters such as Niecy Nash, who couldn’t resist telling Rihanna that she went as her for Halloween.
Laverne Cox
Hello, blonde bombshell! One of the hosts of E!’s red carpet show, Cox served up old Hollywood glam in a vintage Galliano gown and jewels to match, including diamonds from the 1910s, 1920s, and 1950s by Fred Leighton. And we love a hair jewel! Let this be a formal request: More hair jewels, please.
