We get it: It’s been a week (or so). First the Golden Globes on Jan. 7, followed by the Governors Awards, the BAFTA tea party, the AFI awards luncheon, the National Board of Review gala—not to mention various movie premieres and film festivals. The Creative Arts Emmys were handed out the same day as the Globes! Then the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 14. And finally—long-delayed, thanks to the writers’ and actors’ strikes—the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards on Jan. 15.
Perhaps that’s the reason for all the, ahem, understated jewelry on the Emmy red carpet at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Stylists and actors must be exhausted. (First-world problems, we know.)
Fortunately, a few stars managed to steal the proverbial spotlight. And here’s hoping everyone rests, recharges, and gets reinvigorated—jewelry-wise—for the SAG Awards and Oscars.
Jessica Chastain
If you follow JCK’s awards-show jewelry roundups, you know that Chastain appears in nearly every single one of them. She never makes a misstep. Nominated for her turn as country singer Tammy Wynette in the Showtime miniseries George & Tammy, Chastain went for bold in a custom neon green sequined Gucci gown (she’s a Gucci girl) and ultra-glam emerald, yellow diamond, and white diamond jewels by Reza. Colored stones on the red carpet—it’s such a rarity, and it doesn’t need to be.
Ke Huy Quan
If you remember anything from Ke Huy Quan’s appearances while Everything Everywhere All at Once was racking up accolades last year, it’s that the man loves a brooch. And we love a man who loves a brooch. This beauty is from Cartier; he also added cufflinks and a sizable watch from the maison. Memo to the men: We saw way too many empty lapels at the Emmys. Take a look at the guys at the Critics Choice Awards—brooches abounded.
Claire Danes
More colored stones! Our cup runneth over. Three-time Emmy winner Danes—who was nominated for her turn in the novel-based miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble—played off the embellishments on her vintage Balmain gown with a Cartier high jewelry spinel bracelet and sapphire earrings. How perfect was the match? Many red-carpet watchers were wondering if the shoulder adornments were jewels as well.
Selena Gomez
Here’s a stone we wish we saw more often at awards shows: morganite. Gomez, a nominee for the kooky Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building, could have simply gone with diamonds; her maroon sequined Oscar de la Renta gown was intricate enough. But a Tiffany Bird on a Rock necklace with a pale pinky-peach morganite center stone, plus a morganite ring, brightened up the look just a bit. Intriguing, playful, and still traditional (it is a Schlumberger design, after all).
Sarah Snook
The epic HBO drama Succession, which ended after four explosive seasons in May, cleaned up at the Emmys, including wins for series, actors Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen, and Snook—whose look was a big winner as well. The power-red Vivienne Westwood corset-and-balloon-skirt gown, the diamond-and-emerald Cartier jewels—massive earrings and a necklace, plus a more understated line bracelet and Panthère ring—scream classic.
Katherine Heigl
Remember when we told you that you’d be seeing a lot of red? Selena Gomez, Sarah Snook, Katherine Heigl, Suki Waterhouse, Meghann Fahy, Janelle James, Juliette Lewis…all Emmy ladies in red. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Heigl—one of the original stars of Grey’s Anatomy, which is about to start its 20th season—but we daresay she’s never looked better. We’re a sucker for a ballgown (this is Reem Acra), not to mention timeless diamond jewelry (this is Rahaminov, and it’s major).
Ali Wong
Lest you think we don’t get excited about white diamond jewelry, check out Ali Wong’s jaw-dropping Chopard earrings. We’re huge fans of the comedian-turned-actor, who won a slew of other awards in the run-up to the Emmys, and loved seeing her in giant chandelier earrings, multiple diamond rings, and a colorful, detailed Louis Vuitton gown. With her win for her performance in the Netflix limited series Beef (another of the night’s big Emmy winners), Wong became the first woman of Asian descent to receive an Emmy for a leading role.
