Oh, the irony: While the movie Bling Ring was stealing the show at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, which opened May 15, real-life thieves were stealing Chopard jewelry from a hotel safe.
Multiple media outlets are reporting today that Chopard, which has been the official partner of the Festival de Cannes for 15 years, was the victim of a $1 million jewel heist. Pieces meant to be loaned to celebrities walking the red carpet were nabbed from a room safe.
Cannes police told HollywoodReporter.com that the value of the stolen jewels was “about $1.4 million,” while USA Today reports that “robbers ripped the safe off the wall.” The theft occurred at the Suite Novotel Cannes Centre. Hotel employees are being questioned because authorities suspect it was an inside job.
A Chopard spokesperson tells JCK that the company has no comment on the theft at this time.
Since the festival kicked off this week, photographs of Cara Delevigne, Georgia May Jagger, Julianne Moore, Lana Del Rey, Solange Knowles, Cindy Crawford, and Lynne Ramsay in Chopard jewels have been circulated in the media. The company debuted its 2013 Red Carpet jewelry collection at the recent Baselworld fair in Switzerland.
