There’s nothing like starting your weekend off in style—especially if it’s 1966 style.
What I discovered in the JCK magazine archives for that year was that Bulova really stole the show with their jewelry ads. I am convinced that Don Draper and Peggy Olson from Mad Men were working for whatever ad agency the company employed back then.
As always, there were plenty of other ads that caught my eye because of their beauty or silliness. Here are my 10 favorites to cap off this Mad Men-inspired week:
January 1966
I love ads with big type. This is a striking ad that actually makes you want to read the copy at the bottom.
Caravelle (a division of Bulova)
New movie title: Crouching Jeweler, Hidden Dragon
Sweet Manufacturing Co.
Nothing says jewelry like a French horn.
February 1966
J. & S. S. DeYoung (The company celebrated its 170-year anniversary in 2005!)
Now this is a jewelry ad that will snap a reader of any era to attention. Wowser!
Gift Box Corporation of America
Pretty risqué ad for an industry known to be on the conservative side!
April 1966
Hayward
An incredibly sweet ad. Pitch perfect for Mother’s Day.
May 1966
Caravelle (a division of Bulova)
“Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.” Simon & Garfunkel
July 1966
This ad is gangsta’.
Caravelle (a division of Bulova)
Cher: “They say we’re young and we don’t know. We won’t find out until we grow.” Sonny: “Well I don’t know if all that’s true. ‘Cause you got me, and baby I got you.”
October 1966
International Cultured Pearls
Well…yeah…that is one creative use of pearls.
