Macy’s Inc. announced Wednesday that it will shutter nearly 30 stores following a holiday sales slump that saw comparable store sales for November and December fall 0.6%.

In the entire fiscal third quarter of 2019, Macy’s same-store sales fell 3.5%. As a result, the retailer posted its first sales decline in two years. The company blamed unseasonably warm weather and soft foot traffic at low-tier, underperforming malls for the sluggishness.

Macy’s told investors it will close 28 Macy’s stores and one Bloomingdale’s location. Most of the stores planned for closure are in the eastern and northwestern U.S., with only six of the 28 located in the western U.S.

In 2006, Macy’s announced it would shutter 100 stores over several years. But after closing 68 stores in 2017, the pace of closures slowed—last year the chain shuttered fewer than 10 locations.

Going forward, Macy’s says it wants to focus on top-performing locations in top-tier malls, while simultaneously investing more in its e-commerce and off-price Backstage concept. CNBC reports that it’s also been testing reducing the size of a few of its larger locations.

Macy’s currently has around 680 stores in operation, including Bloomingdale’s units and roughly 190 specialty stores that include beauty concept Bluemercury and Macy’s Backstage stores.
