The Accredited Gemologists Association has sent out a fraud alert that an online vendor is issuing lab reports that look like they are coming from the group.
The problem: The AGA doesn’t issue reports. It doesn’t even have a lab.
“The Accredited Gemologists Association is NOT a laboratory and does not provide laboratory services of any kind,” wrote the group on its site. “In the event that you are shown a report that appears to be issued by the AGA, be assured it is fake. Use of a fake report is cause for concern about the integrity of the seller presenting it. Please report such cases to the fraud authorities in your area.”
It adds: “Please note that this use of our name and/or website image/logo is unacceptable and should raise a red flag to any consumer considering these reports.”
A eBay listing, apparently from Italy, with one of these reports accompanying a ruby can be seen here. Another report can be seen on this Italian website. Other samples can be seen on the organization’s website.
JCK was unable to reach the sellers at press time. The AGA received notice of the reports from concerned members.
The AGA recently announced it was honoring Robert Weldon with its 2020 Bonanno Award at its February gala.
