New York City Jewelry Week 2019 kicked off over the weekend. Now in its sophomore year, the most notable change to the event is that the schedule is absolutely packed to the gills with goings-on—from low-key gallery exhibits and studio open houses to important talks on anything and everything affecting, and of interest to, the jewelry industry, including designing with lab-created diamonds and accurately dating your vintage jewelry inventory.
One such event is taking place Monday evening at Mahnaz Collection, a modern design and art jewelry gallery on 57th Street, where owner Mahnaz Ispahani curates original, influential, fine vintage and artist-made jewelry from the mid-20th century onward, showcasing work from established houses as well as independent and studio jewelers and artists.
The invitation-only reception is being held in celebration of a new jewelry exhibition titled “A Winter Garden: Jewelry by New London Originals” featuring works from contemporary British jewelers Alice Cicolini and Christopher Thompson Royds, along with a selection of pieces from the 1960s and 1970s.
“This exhibit aims to provide greater visibility in the United States for the new wave of London-based jewelers, whose innovative process and points of view merit wider public and curatorial attention,” said Ispahani in a statement. “We are increasingly looking to the foremost contemporary art jewelers working today, many of whom, like Alice Cicolini and Christopher Thompson Royds, are living and working in London. They are, in a sense, the new London Originals, a group of jewelers from the 1960s and 1970s, who we have long collected and exhibited.”
Ispahani will be moderating a talk with the two artists on Nov. 21, on the topic of “Preservation and Process.”
