The Cheapside Hoard is in Baselworld by way of Stephen Webster’s newest jewelry collection dubbed Gold Struck. The U.K.-based jewelry designer renown for his Crystal Haze doublets and pointy—think barbed-wire and thorn effects in metal—unveiled a colorful follow-up to last year’s impressive Magnipheasant, which is also inspired by the designer’s home turf.
Gold Struck, however, nods to the infamous cache of jewels discovered at the turn of the last century in the Cheapside neighborhood of London underneath a department store. Webster’s interpretation of those discoveries—cameos, karat gold pendants, and carved emeralds, among others—include tumbled textures (as if just dug up from hiding), detachable numbers, ear climbers, two-finger rings, and plenty of other more traditional SKUs like pendants. Not surprisingly, whimsical color combinations offset Webster’s signature sharp aesthetic, which includes irregular faceting and lots of tiny rocks orbiting center stones. Gold Struck will pair perfectly with Webster’s other modern, fun offerings like the ombré-colored chevrons in Lady Stardust, and if I could place an order for just one piece, it would be the amethyst and garnet number (below) for its robust colors and playful vignettes of stones.
