“I’ve got a blank space, baby…” Was Taylor Swift singing about her roster of lovers or her jewelry collection? The negative-space trend has been around for a while, and it’s stronger than ever. Bangles and cuff bracelets with cutouts and sculptured, wiry shapes. Rings with crisscrossing lines that appear to me like orbiting planets. Anything, really, that takes the wearer’s skin into account, making it a part of the accessory, fits the bill. Most of what I’ve seen is unadorned, which is a good thing. The look is minimalist but catching, sleek, and chic. Apart from diamonds or cubic zirconia lining the curved shapes, gemstones are not the star of this trend. Look for pieces that are metal heavy (but not heavy metal), ranging in thickness from chunky to petite, the sweet spot being somewhere in between. While you hum along to that TSwift song, wondering why it’s stuck in your head now (sorry! Or, you’re welcome, depending on your outlook), take a look at some of the best examples of this trend. And stock ’em!
