Colored Stones: GemWorld’s New World of Color & More

SHELF IMPROVEMENT

Talking to Hue

In February, Gemworld International, publisher of the pricing-oriented GemGuide, introduced its World of Color communication system to buyers at the Tucson, Ariz., gem shows. Two years in the making, the $495 system consists of a master comparison book brimming with more than 1,600 colors based on the Munsell color system developed by artist Albert Munsell in the early 1900s, a companion price guide, and a colorless crown to aid in matching colors to gems.

Gemworld International president Richard Drucker says World of Color will succeed where past systems have failed because it’s intuitive, portable, and correlates World of Color selections with GemGuide’s 1–10 pricing scale. Plus, he says, the book places a premium on consistency.

“This was done on a $20 million printer and when they run it, there’s a guarantee that copy 1 looks like copy 1,000,” Drucker says. “When we went to the final print run, we were there for an entire week.” —Victoria Gomelsky
