The Esperanza diamond
A Colorado woman has found an 8.52 ct. diamond at the famed Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Ark.
Bobbie Oskarson of Longmont, Colo., found the diamond in a mound of dirt she had scooped up from under a tree. The diamond is clear white, icicle shaped, and is the fifth-largest diamond found in the park’s 43-year history. The largest was a 16.37 ct. diamond found in 1975. The diamond is the 227th to be found in the park this year.
“Ms. Oskarson’s eight-and-a-half-carat diamond is absolutely stunning, sparkling with a metallic shine, and appears to be an unbroken, capsule-shaped crystal. It features smooth, curved facets, a characteristic shared by all unbroken diamonds from the Crater of Diamonds,” said park interpreter Waymon Cox. “[It] is about three-quarters of an inch long and as big around as a standard No. 2 pencil.”
She named her find the Esperanza diamond, after her niece. She plans to keep it.
