Mention Argyle pink diamonds and one immediately thinks of the Rio Tinto–owned Australian mine’s famous stones, but there’s a diamantaire in New York who wants retailers to know that even those who can afford a pair of $1,000,000 Argyle pink diamond earrings aren’t always reaching for the record breakers. Instead, the sophisticated consumer is showing a preference for more understated pieces that offer the allure, and undeniable cachet, of the best pink diamonds without the price tag of a Beverly Hills mansion.
A leading supplier not only of important loose Argyle pinks but also of finished jewelry that beautifully showcases the coveted gems, JFine has recently introduced designs using smaller Argyle pink diamonds that retail for around $1,500 (there’s even a tiny heart pendant clocking in at $600).
As an authorized partner of Argyle Pink Diamonds, the company receives a regular allocation of pink diamonds directly from the mine, including quite a bit of high-quality melee to use either as accent stones or the main event.
Says JFine company president Jordan Fine, “A large percentage of Argyle’s production is melee, which is meticulously sorted according to Argyle’s color scale. The stones are perfectly matched for color when we receive them, and the cuts are excellent.”
Most of Argyle’s finest pink stones are sold at its annual tenders, and this can include 0.01 ct. melee in shades of super-vivid pink or even red priced at $65,000 per ct. “And all Argyle pink diamonds greater than 0.08 carats are laser inscribed and come with a certificate of authenticity from the mine, which is a nice touch for consumers,” Fine adds.
But whether it’s a $350,000 ring set with an intense pink, radiant-cut VS2 diamond or a comparatively modest $6,000 eternity band, “We strive to achieve harmony between the color, scale, beauty, and perceived value of our jewelry,” says Fine. “There was a considerable effort put into developing product that would entice consumers with attractive price points, and it also took us years to accumulate enough pinks for the collection and to ensure that repeatable pieces can be repeated.”
Take the ring below, for example. “In theory, it sounds easy to get 13 matching 3 mm fancy pink diamonds. In reality, it’s not easy,” says Fine.
And while JFine’s Argyle jewelry collection almost always gives the pinks pride of place, occasionally they are used to enhance the beauty of, say, a magnificent bicolor tourmaline for a design that telegraphs luxury from every nook and cranny. “Our designer was drawn to the apple green and watermelon tourmaline colors and felt like they would contrast beautifully with soft Argyle Pink diamonds,” says Fine. (And at a recent photo shoot, actress Kate Beckinsale was apparently in agreement.)
