That tomorrow is Valentine’s Day nearly escaped me—I knew the holiday was upon us, and I even picked out a theoretical gift, if my significant other feels so inclined—but it is not a holiday circled in red on my calendar.
My husband and I—back before he was called “husband”—used to “celebrate” February 14 by picking up a meal at McDonald’s. We thought we were really sticking it to “the man” (in this case, would “the man” be Cupid?) by avoiding fancy reservations and gifts on a day that we felt forced to do so. Until we realized that: a) we were, in fact, celebrating, just not very well; and b) we were forcing ourselves to eat McDonald’s.
Fast forward 10 years, and not much has changed but the absence of fast food and the gentle reminder that, now that our lives are busy with a baby, maybe a national holiday that encourages extra I love you’s isn’t such a bad idea, after all.
Still, I won’t be expecting any heart jewelry for Valentine’s Day. And that’s okay, because every other day of the year is totally fair game.
Heart jewelry is sort of synonymous with this holiday, and I think it has been so long associated with it that it gets relegated to the background during other times of the year. Which is a shame, because I really love heart jewelry. And I think it’s gearing up for a pretty big showing in 2019.
Look to the runways, and you’ll see the likes of Rodarte, Balenciaga, and Escada touting larger-than-life jewels in the heart shape, from gigantic earrings to chunky necklaces. Thrice over makes a trend, so if you’re short on hearts—though you may have just bulked up pre–Valentine’s Day—start looking for some to stock.
For the trendiest shoppers, the oversize heart silhouettes will indeed be a best bet, but like any of-the-moment style, variations apply. There is a world of worthy heart jewelry on the market, with new styles continuously making entry, so you won’t be short on inspiring finds.
What I enjoy the most? The thought of pushing hard on heart jewelry after Valentine’s Day. Now that, unlike my unsuccessful attempts to avoid this holiday, is wonderfully ironic.
