GIA Offering $2 Million in Scholarships in 2019

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is offering $2 million in scholarships this year for aspiring gem and jewelry professionals interested in its gemology and jewelry manufacturing arts programs, distance education courses, and lab classes.

The 2019 scholarships are funded by the GIA Endowment Fund and private donors.

Applications for 2019 scholarships are available starting today at GIA.edu/scholarships. The application deadline is March 31. GIA will accept applications for 2020 scholarships beginning in August.

In a statement, Natalie Tjaden, who was able to earn a GIA Graduate Gemologist degree through a scholarship, said, “I urge any prospective student who contemplates applying for a scholarship to do so. It was a minimal amount of time and work compared to the opportunities I received.”

Another recipient, Myra Bashir (pictured), added that “a GIA scholarship made a big difference for me, not only financially, but it gave me the opportunity to study something I love.”

GIA has awarded more than $10 million in scholarships to 2,000 students since 2010. It also offered $2 million in scholarships last year.

“Scholarships are a very important part of our mission-driven education programs, helping hundreds of students start or advance their careers in the global gem and jewelry industry every year,” said Duncan Pay, vice president and chief academic officer, in a statement.
