Withings Releases Its First Budget Smartwatch

Seminal smartwatch brand Withings made one of the first-ever wearables we tried—the gorgeous Steel, which has remained a firm favorite of ours since.

Now the brand, which was bought by Nokia in 2016 but was recently sold back its cofounder, Éric Carreel, has debuted its first fully featured accessibly price smartwatch: the sporty $69.95 Move.

But it’s really more of a fitness tracker—recording the length and duration of various activities including walking and running, steps, and swimming. It also tracks, if the wearer chooses, calories and, with its built-in GPS, distance, pace, and elevation. Move is compatible with both iOS and Android phones.

A button on the side of the watch connects to the companion phone app, which is where you set preferences and review your metrics and fitness results. There’s no touch-screen component, à la Apple Watch.

Move’s 38 mm–case is plastic but stylish—with a unisex design that recalls classic Swatch watches. And the watch comes in fittingly fun colorways including pink, green, yellow, and blue.

The watch’s battery life is darn impressive if it’s a reality: The company claims its battery will last up to 18 months, even with daily use.

The rise of cheap, good-looking fitness smartwatches makes sense to me, as someone who likes the benefits of a smartwatch during workouts, but doesn’t necessarily want to wear a buzzing rubber-strapped watch all day.

Smart move, Withings.
