Didn’t I tell you I’d have more Disney news?
This time, a celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday is being hosted by Shinola, the Detroit-based watch company that’s pretty special to us at JCK (read why, here).
The Mickey Mouse Classics collection, a collaboration between Shinola and Disney, is a line of limited- and special-edition styles including Shinola Runwell timepieces, wall clocks, leather accessories, audio equipment, and journals. I’m coveting all of them (which comes as a big surprise to no one).
There are five limited-edition Runwell timepieces, each featuring illustrations specially created for Shinola: They feature Mickey’s iconic appearances in Plane Crazy and Steamboat Willie as well as Mickey’s lovable self in a variety of poses. Each watch is limited to 90 pieces per style (the 90 is an ode to Mickey’s big birthday) and comes with one of five framed original sketches of Mickey and a special-edition Shinola sketchbook accompanied by a “How to Draw Mickey” instructional booklet. Given its very limited availability, I’m peppering my Christmas list with my favorite variations. Please, Santa!
For leather goods, Shinola’s Runwell backpack gets a hand-stitched leather appliqué of Steamboat Willie, and a leather tech portfolio is lined with a “How to Draw Mickey” illustration (which is featured on the backpack, too). The journals available feature flip-books animating a scene from The Nifty Nineties, a 1941 cartoon created by Disney legend and integral Mickey contributor Fred Moore.
Finally, in the category of things I didn’t know I needed but now absolutely do, Shinola has released a Mickey turntable, perfect for playing my vinyl collection of Disney’s classic tunes.
The Mickey Mouse Classics became available on November 16 (my husband’s birthday—an excuse to get myself, I mean him, a watch from this collection, right?), on shinola.com and in-store at Shinola, the Disney Store, and other specialty retailers. With prices ranging from $28 to $2,500, there’s a sweet spot for everyone on your holiday list. But don’t go buying up everything in the collection too quickly—leave something for me!
Visit shinola.com to see everything available in the new collection.
