Thanksgiving may seem to be skipped over en route to the Christmas holiday—at least in pop culture terms—but the reality is that it’s a very important time for retailers big and small. On a personal level, it’s a sentimental time best spent with family, to come together to show gratitude for one another and—as our bellies are all possibly still bursting—an opportunity to devour some really good (but not necessarily good for you) food.

In a larger sense—an economic one—Thanksgiving paves the way to the holiday shopping season, and so, while many of us enjoy gathering around a table with family and friends, we may end the night surfing the internet on our iPads hunting for deals (like on a new iPad).

But Black Friday isn’t the only opportunity to bargain hunt (not much hunting required when you’re constantly blasted with emails about the season’s biggest sales). Cyber Monday has quickly become one of the biggest shopping days of the year, a day dedicated to doing business online.

The most important shopping day, however (at least in my opinion), falls in between the two: Small Business Saturday.

Just as supporting indie jewelry designers has become all the more vital (and thankfully, popular) in our industry as well as others, shopping at small, independently owned stores keeps family businesses and artisans open and able to thrive. The spotlight gets shone on the importance of shopping small on just one day a year, so keeping small business top of mind all year-round is something we can all strive for.

In between my flurry of emails from retailers big and small this past weekend (I write this on Sunday afternoon, when Cyber Monday has yet to occur), a quick scroll through Instagram kept me in both the spirit of Thanksgiving—and in the mood to shop.
From those wishing their friends and followers a Happy Thanksgiving through photos of staff, jewelry, or custom graphics to those sharing news about their upcoming sales, this is how the industry kicked off the holiday shopping season on the ‘gram.

And a tip for those business accounts on Instagram, as we move into the holidays:
If ever there was a time to use the shopping feature in both your Instagram posts and Stories, this is it. See some of these posts for examples on how to do it, and get inspired to start making some social media sales!
