Beautiful clothes were in the spotlight at Monday night’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards gala in Brooklyn, N.Y.—but there was plenty of great jewelry to ogle at the high-profile fashion event, too.
The gala, which celebrates emerging designers handpicked by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (the CFDA), crowned a new prince of fashion Monday: designer Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of the provocative Pyer Moss brand.
Jean-Raymond—whose thought-provoking collections have called out social injustices, gun violence, racism, and police violence—took home the top prize, which comes packaged with a $400,000 purse and mentorships with top fashion designers.
Pyer Moss’s inclusive DNA, which embraces body, age, gender, and racial diversity, made for invigorating fashion-watching Monday night. It wasn’t so long ago that the event’s red carpet felt like a baggage carrier ushering in white, size-2 models almost exclusively.
But on Monday night, Vogue and the CFDA showed that they’re receiving the messages both consumers and brands are broadcasting: diversity and inclusivity aren’t fashion trends—they’re the future of fashion.
The event’s focus is clothes, but what are great clothes without killer jewels? (The CFDA Awards, a separate annual event, honors jewelry and accessories.) Gala attendees didn’t disappoint there. Here are five not-to-be-missed jewelry moments from the event.

Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes Leon, wins our award for most offbeat accessory of the evening: a pair of long, silver-tone earrings dangling tiny white coin purses. Yes, actual coin purses! She also wore a silver (or white gold or platinum) necklace bearing the initial “L.”
