I feel like this is the first time in a while that I can genuinely say I’m enthusiastic about Pantone’s latest Fashion Color Report. I’d be pretty excited to call a decent number of these the 2019 Color of the Year, and I’m looking forward to finding out which one is declared the lucky winner.
Sure, I like some more than others, and there is one in particular that I’d rather wasn’t awarded the title (more on that below), but I wouldn’t be disappointed with most (you can hold me to that when if I start complaining once the announcement is made).
First of all, there’s no purple. So my least favorite color (it’s inexplicable, I just don’t fancy it), has no chance of entering a second year in the spotlight (bye, Ultra Violet).
The only shade that gives me slight pause is Sweet Lilac. Though I remain a staunch supporter of the Millennial Pink craze (even if it is arguably overdone, it’s an undeniably precious color to which I say: more, more!), the selection of this particular pink hue as Color of the Year would definitely move us into overkill territory. Where the softness of Millennial Pink is inoffensive, Sweet Lilac threatens to drench us all in Pepto-Bismol, oversaturating our wardrobes. That being said, it’s a lovely color that I hope to see accenting our spring and summer outfits in say, stripe form.

Don’t get me wrong: While I’m pretty cool with Pantone’s selections, there are a few I’m rooting for to be made Color of the Year. Namely, Princess Blue, Aspen Gold, and Jester Red. My immediate response was to declare Turmeric my favorite, and, while my eye is drawn to the vivacious shade initially, I have to wonder if an overload of it would be tiresome. There really is such a phenomenon as “too much of a good thing.” So while it’s an early favorite, I don’t want to own everything drenched in it.

If I had to venture a guess as to what the official color will be? My money is on either Princess Blue or Fiesta. They’re both bright, cheerful shades and neutral enough to complement anything. Other paint sources have announced their selections for 2019 Color of the Year, many veering towards the blue spectrum. So it will be interesting to see what Pantone opts to select and why.
