Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is making $2 million in educational scholarships available this year, it announced recently.
The scholarships, funded by the GIA Endowment Fund and private donors, are available for both people starting out in the gems and jewelry world as well as established professionals.
They include grants to GIA’s gemology and jewelry manufacturing arts programs, distance education courses, and lab classes. The GIA is also offering international scholarships for non-U.S. citizens or nonpermanent residents, which include subsidies for classes at its campuses in Bangkok; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Hong Kong; London; Mumbai, India; Carlsbad, Calif.; New York City; Surat, India; and Taipei, Taiwan.
The applications for 2019 scholarships are available at GIA.edu/scholarships. The application period opened on Aug. 1, and the deadline for applications is Sept. 30.
“These scholarships help people follow their dreams and pursue their passion in gems and jewelry.” said Duncan Pay, the GIA’s recently appointed vice president and chief academic officer, in a statement. “With changing consumer trends and technological advancements in the industry, it is now more important than ever to have professional qualifications.”
Since 2015, GIA has awarded more than $8 million in scholarships to more than 1,500 students globally.
