If you savored contributor Roxanne Robinson’s scintillating recap of the high jewelry collections shown during Paris Couture Week, this intimate look at Brazilian jewelry designer Ana Khouri’s presentation at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs offers a kind of digestif following the main event.
As Roxanne noted, the models were clad in white gowns in a gallery-like setting that also displayed Khouri’s artwork (she is a sculptor as well as a jewelry designer). In fact, Khouri “sculpted” the gowns herself with a vision of the models as marble statues standing alongside the pillars in the Hall Des Maréchaux.
The white gowns not only offered the perfect blank canvas for highlighting Khouri’s jewelry, particularly the pieces that incorporate colored gems, but also served as a vehicle for conveying the concept behind her new Essence collection: “You have to strip away the nonessential, distill what remains into its pure form, and channel only that energy essential to who you are in your work,” Khouri said in a statement.
Khouri’s intent was to create “pieces that are not simply beautiful, but ones that move you,” she said. “I hope that everyone who sees them will leave with their own internal reflection.
“I want people to feel something visceral when they see them. I want to give them an experience.”
No experience can compare to seeing the jewels in person, especially given the lyrical quality of the presentation and stature of the setting.
