We’re all familiar with Pantone’s Color of the Year—it’s been an anticipated announcement from the Color Institute since it began in the year 2000, whether you agree with their choices (I fiercely enjoy the debate). Well, now there’s a new hue to add to the mix, if you’re so inclined. This one comes from home brand KitchenAid, which recently announced plans to reveal a new color each year, much like Pantone.
Their color this year: An orangey-coral dubbed Bird of Paradise. According to a press release: “Bird of Paradise embodies the lush, tropical paradise, an escape from the everyday, and boasts a spirit of exploration inviting the passionate maker to take on any culinary adventure.” The name does evoke that of a flamingo, and the color is pretty close, too. I’m not sure I’d want these appliances in my kitchen necessarily (they’d get old pretty quickly, at least for me), but the color is gorgeous and most certainly intriguing in other forms—like jewelry, naturally.

Though I’m instantly reminded of coral when I see the image of the stand mixer, there are a number of other stones—not to mention rose gold!—that match nicely. A peach moonstone, padparadscha sapphire, morganite, and perhaps even just the right color pearl would do the trick.

Could KitchenAid be as influential as Pantone is in the color world? I imagine not, but you never know. KitchenAid plans to release a number of their countertop appliances in a yearly hue, and if these particular products catch on, I can see people accommodating them in their kitchens with efforts to redecorate, which could extend to the whole house, which could extend to the closet, and on the story goes.

If anything, this serves as a reminder of how lovely and spirited this color looks in jewelry, and it’s so ready to welcome summer. Don’t you just feel warmer already in its presence? Wishful thinking!
