On April 15, American Gem Society executive director Ruth Batson (right) won the group’s Robert M. Shipley award, its highest honor, at its annual conclave.
“It is amazing to be up here with this group of people, many of whom are mentors,” Batson said, accepting her award to a standing ovation. “I wish I could have met [AGS founder] Robert M. Shipley. I am surrounded by his words and his vision.”
Batson also thanked the AGS staff, who she said, “inspire me every single day.”
Batson’s award came at a significant time: The group’s longtime executive director announced in February she will retire next year after 24 years with the group, and 14 years in the top job.
The annual educational event was held April 13–16 in Washington, D.C.
