From statement earrings at Ulla Johnson to skull pendants the size of dinner plates at VFiles, there are always a number of jewelry stories and budding trends to report on during NYFW. But the Dennis Basso SS18 presentation was special—and not just because the designer was celebrating 35 years in the fashion business. Basso, who styled the show himself, draped the models in an exquisite mix of David Webb pieces, including the famed jeweler’s signature bracelets and sautoirs bursting with carved and gumball-smooth cabochon beads, and pendulous earrings hung with diamonds and turquoise.

Held in the Plaza Hotel Grand Ballroom in New York City, Basso’s SS18 presentation was inspired by “the international woman who has traveled the world to exotic and interesting locales,” according to the program notes. This reference point, coupled with designer’s chosen palette of vibrant violet, aqua, cayenne, and rust, made Webb’s colorful designs featuring carved coral and jade, polished lapis, and amethyst a natural choice. (Plus, the two brands enjoy a general friendship and very likely share a similar clientele).

Basso also showed gowns of tulle and chiffon, done in elegant neutral tones of vanilla, sand and khaki. For these, he went with Webb’s luminous rock crystal bracelets…
